E’ stato ufficialmente rilasciato a gennaio dalla Polyvinyl, l’ultimo album della one man band Of Montreal, intitolato “Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?”, realizzato da Kevin Barnes, con la sola collaborazione di parenti e amici. Ormai è chiaro che, tranne rare eccezioni, è quasi impossibile ingabbiare una band o un album in un genere definito. E non è questa l’eccezione.
Il terreno di gioco in questo caso è l’indie pop ma Barnes si diverte a giocare con ogni genere musicale possibile: si spazia dalla dance anni ’80 alle chitarre psichedeliche fino a toni dark, passando poi per ritmi funk, manipolazioni e distorsioni elettroniche per sfociare infine nel college rock. Un album sicuramente caotico e imprevedibile, un agglomerato instabile di emozioni e atmosfere oniriche e surreali. D’altra parte è stato scritto durante un lungo periodo di depressione e Barnes stesso lo ha definito un concept album, un tentativo di mettersi a nudo per mezzo di testi dalla disarmante onestà in cui affronta temi molto personali: fallimenti, cuori spezzati, crisi mistiche, frustrazione…

Nonostante i temi “difficili” però, l’energia e il ritmo travolgente della musica saranno sicuramente apprezzati da chi cerca qualcosa fuori dall’ordinario.
Svettano su tutte “Gronlandic Edit”, “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse” e i 12 minuti della splendida “The Past Is A Grotesque Animal”, fulcro dell’album, in salsa electro-funk.
